is there a way to tell if the compressor is shot?

I'd love to be able to do the conversion you mention myself. my 88 900TC has been blowing hot for a while. figured it was low on freon. first time it was in the shop for something else I asked it to be recharged, but was told he was out of R12. second time it was in for something else he said he didn't fix it because the compressor was shot.
is there a way to confirm the compressor isn't working? I've only seen them seized when it's obvious they're shot. I'd guess if the clutch was engaging the RPM's would drop down slightly? if that doesn't happen, can just the clutch be replaced like on some York compressors? just curious if I can confirm it is toast.
Thanks,
Brian
