Brian . . . does the second fan come on and the clutch click when you hit the a/c switch? If it does, the compressor is probably fine. If it doesn't it could just be that the coolant is low. Try bypassing the low pressure swtich at the receiver/dryer by briefly touching the two leads together. If the a/c engages then i'd say the compressor is probably OK.
