A turbo pressure gauge measures the pressure difference between the intake manifold and the ambient atmosphere regardless of whether it is OEM or aftermarket. On the OEM gauge, with the engine off, the gauge reads near the top of the white, which means the manifold pressure is the same as atmospheric. When you step on the throttle, manifold pressure drops as air is sucked into the cylinders, and the gauge needle swings to the left because the pressure in the intake manifold is less than atmospheric pressure. When the turbo kicks in, it generates higher than atmospheric pressure in the intake manifold and the gauge reads up in the yellow or red, depending on how much pressure the turbo is providing.
You can duplicate this behavior by sucking on or blowing into the hose leading to the gauge.
