Long cranking 90T before starting....

My 90Turbo cranks for a VERY long time before firing. Once running, all seems OK. The car has had a new fuel pump recently, fuel filter unknown, plugs & cap/rotor all new. Also FYI, a full fuel tank minimizes the length of time, but just a bit. By long I mean 8-10 seconds and sometimes longer! I know this will fry the starter eventually, so I need to resolve it.
I have also a 90S which had a similar problem, and it was resolved by replacing the checkvalve located on top the fuel pump. For anyone who has done this task, it is a major PITA!!!! The Bentley shows a nifty tool for inserting the new check valve, which of course I didn't have. I have heard even the dealer curses this job. I ended up dropping the gas tank, removing the supply side line between tank & fuel filter (another PITA), then flushing out the line with water, and finally heating the line to the point of melting the hardplastic with a torch, then inserting the new fuel check valve. The end result was the car starts in 3 cranks or less, typically.
Given the hemorrhoid like nature of all this, I am hoping perhaps something else could be responsible for the long cranking? Thinking about changing the fuel filter first and seeing the impact.
Any wisdom from those who've BTDT?
