That's exactly the point - you DO want to destroy the discolored surface and laying a rag over your finger, dipping it lightly into acetone and scrubbing the plastic down with your finger, not leaving it on very long (it evaporates fast) will do wonders. You can follow up with back to black or similar on the fresh surface. Of course, masking the surrounding paint off is highly advised. Test surfaces for result first.
Trust me, I've done it. Don't be such a sceptic.
