The most common reason for losing the reading on your boost gauge is that the vacuum hose that leads to the gauge has fallen off the vacuum nipple on the side of the intake manifold.
Put the hose back on the nipple first. Then let us know what's happening on the boost gauge when the shuddering occurs.
It's always possible that the hoses have fallen off the back of the boost gauge, but check the intake manifold end first.
If it hasn't been done recently, you'll want to replace all of the vacuum hoses. Then tend to get brittle and crack after a decade of underhood temperatures.
What grade of gas are you running?
