Hi Garret,
I have a '90 900N/A that had similar problems about a year ago. While driving, the engine would cut out & the tach would drop to 0. Sometimes it would "catch" itself within a second or two & cut back in with a very brief surge, sometimes it would stay dead & I'd need to pull over to the side of the road & restart it (it might restart immediately, or may take a minute or two). It got progressively worse to the point where you're describing. I tracked it down to the ignition amplifier module & crank position sensor as being the two most likely culprits. In my case, it turned out to be the crank sensor. eEuroparts was the only place where I could find the splice-in sensor (about $65, I think). If you go this route, be aware that the wire colors were wrong.
