Buying Sven in 1984 was when you paid sticker price at most dealers. We got him in Salem, MA and he went back to the dealer maybe 3 times. They were a Mercedes/Saab/Suby store and treated all but MB customers with contempt. So I went to DIY except for a few things that went to a local indy who was a real pirate but if you knew enough wasn't too bad.
We didn't really consider anything else. We looked at a Volvo 240 wagon but it was as boring as dirt. Looked briefly at a Nissan, a Camry and Accord, but they were tin boxes. Only advantage was that we'd have gotten A/C in one of those for the same money we paid for Sven without air ($11,650 or so). Any of those would have biodegraded to iron oxide some time ago.
Half the break in mileage was on the Maine Turnpike at 75 to 80, so he knows what the lef lane is for.
The pile of records is really not all that large. Not even sure I can find all of it. As close as I can recall off the top of my head:
4 sets of tires, 1 clutch, 2 radiators, 1 starter, 5 or 6 exhaust systems, 1 rear wheel bearing, several front brake calipers, 2 seat platforms, 1 CV joint, 3 CV joint boots, 2 sets rear rotors and pads, 1 set rear calipers, 1 cat, 3 ignition modules, wiper motor transmission, That's most of it. Just changed oil every 5K, did air and fuel filters occasionally. To tell the truth, I never even adjusted the timing or valves from 15K miles until about 150K. Just changed the plugs and wires. He never failed to start and always ran perfectly.
Never imagined we'd have him this long. But it just worked that way. We moved twice, had kids (now 11 and 16). I started working mostly at home 12 years ago so commuting was not a big issue--nor was having a new car. He was a family car for a big chunk of time, then I took him over 6 years ago, put the last 62K on him.
And yeah, it is kind of fun to say I have a 20 year-old car that we've had since new. And at least in a community like TSN, no one thinks it is all that weird.
And now most of my posts are on the 9K board. But I'm going to be looking for a C900 convertible to restore. With old Saabs, yyou can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.
