All you have to do is remove the left speaker. Depending on year either 2 phillips screws or 2 #10 torx screws. Lift the speaker up and out...set aside.
Then, look through the windshield and you will see all the bulb holders. The two that light the gauges are along the top in somewhat larger holders.
Get a mirror so that you can see in the speaker hole while sitting in the car. Turn the bulb holders counterclockwise 1/4 turn(as if looking through the windshield) and pull out. Take a look and feel the surface where the bulb holders lock. If you see evidence of burning and melting with bumps, you might have to fill the holes. First try this and see how it works.
Clean the contacts and bend up the small nub contacts that would face the circuit board. Give the holders and the back of the circuit board a shot of wd40. Replace with 3 watt bulbs. See how it goes. Better than 50/50 chance all will be well. If still intermittent, get out the jbweld and fill the dimples.
