The splined sleeve to hold the pinion shaft while tightening pinion nut is a must. You have no place to clamp the shaft down in a vise without damaging the shaft.
The photo below shows how I held the shaft using soft jaws in a vise....no splined sleeve required.
I have rebuilt a few 5 speed transmissions without any SAAB specialty tools.
