the 91 has an internal centering and the mechanisim on your 82 is part of the external shift linkage, just ahead of the shift assembly under the carpet in the cabin. I think the shift rod lengths may be different too but if not then you can use the newer tranny in your older car, just disconnect the spring from your external centering. good luck,
