It's time-consumig but not difficult Posted by RS [Email] (#15) [Profile/Gallery] (more from RS) on Thu, 8 Jul 2004 19:36:49 In Reply to: Re: They also have different length shifter rods, Alex, Thu, 8 Jul 2004 15:17:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
there are a couple of tricky things - the three-cornered nuts holding the shifter assembly on are annoying but easily removed with a hammer and disposable screwdriver. The rubber thing that seals the hole where the shift rod goes through the firewall is a little tricky to R&R.
It'll be a bit easier to align the shifter if you get the whole shifter assembly/shift rod from your donor car. Then you'll just have to swap ignition lock cylinders on the assembly.
Other than that, the basic procedure is:
Remove driver's seat.
Remove plastic console.
Remove shifter.
(If you haven't done it already, loosen the shift rod coupler so the rod can be pulled out of it.)
Undo the 3 three-cornered nuts.
Flip the shifter assembly and remove the plastic cover on the bottom.
Remove the old shifter rod. Take careful note of where the ring on the shifter rod that the ball on the shift lever goes into is. You'll understand when you see it. Be careful of that rubber filler piece I mentioned. You'll probably want to push it into the passenger compartment from under the car. if you haven't removed the carpet or pulled it a bit upwards, it may be tricky to route the rubber piece underneath it.
Swap in the new shifter rod.
And the rest is the reverse of removal.
