Almost sounds like clutch, but who knows?
Not 'wanting' to go into first can be a dragging clutch, needs to have air bled out of the system. At the same time, it'll engage real low when you just begin lifting the pedal; that can cause the bucking.
You're the one who experienced the bucking... Could it be caused simply from the clutch engaging really close to the floor? How about pumping the clutch pedal? If that helps, it also points to air in the clutch, or a bad clutch master cylinder.
