A classic Saab in great shape is certainly worth $4500 to lots of people, but they would almost never pay $35,000 for a new one that their daughter can take to college or that they risk in the winter, or to give to a kid with a new driver's license.
As used cars, they are safe, relatively economical, sturdy, luxurious, cultish, inexpensive and popular. Certain items are better than the 9-3, certain items are worse, but people are accustomed to those aspects to be lacking with an older car.
When my modified 88 900T gets too tired and rusty in a couple years, I am seriously considering having a street rod shop make molds from the car and build a super rugged tubular space frame including a functional roll cage with the cloned classic 900 fiberglas body, keeping the glass, dash, steering wheel and some other trim from my old car. I'd then consider either a 9-2x aero AWD power transplant to keep it "pure" and usable in the winter, or a chevy V8 with burbling throaty exhaust, muffler bypass switch, RWD, and some cheap tires :-) Either way it'd cost a small fortune, but would let me drive around a better version of the same classic design for another twenty years.
