any methods to prolong transmission failure?

The transmission in my 85 900T is whining in 5th gear. Based on my searches, it is only a matter of time before it locks up/fails. Is there anything I can do to keep it together a little longer? Will a thicker trans oil help? Generally, how long will these units last? The car has 142,000 miles. Thanks in advance.
