necessarily hard or locked up.
But what appears to have happened is loss of pinion bearing preload...common on the earlier 900 trans...I think it was fixed by 89 or 90. I had to replace the manual trans on my 84 900T at 88K for same reason, whining 5th gear...louder under load, lessens when you let up on gas and right before engine compression reverses load on pinion bearing.
The good news is the rebuilt trans often shift better than the OEM...at least mine did. The rebuilt was still going great at 188K when the car was totalled rear ended.
