I've had luck (so far) with converting the original R12 Sanden system over to R134a. Of course, I pulled the clutch end plate, cleaned out the old oil and refit using a silicone sealant in addition to the stock o-ring. No leak at the compressor so far. I have, however, had one of the threaded connector needle valves blow. I simply replaced it with another needle valve. It's my understanding that is common when converting to R134a. The additional pressure (R134a is more dense than R12 and less efficient a heat transfer medium as a result) within the system can cause a needle valve to blow. I've seen conversion kits that include upgraded needle valves because of that reason. Other things that can blow are any of the older o-ring seals on the hose connection points. When I converted my system over two years ago, I dismantled the entire AC system and flushed it out, plus cleaned up all the o-ring seat areas. So far so good and only that one needle valve problem. One of the main reasons for R134a poblems when converting is over-pressurising the R12 designed system, so it is advised to not put in the usual amount of refrigerant. Less is more. I can't tell you in numbers what that safe level is because I didn't use a pressure guage. I just followed the general instructions from others that 24 ounces of R134a plus 6 or so ounces of oil is maximum. A proper vacuum in the system before installing the oil and refrigerant is also crucial, otherwise you're only adding more pressure and inefficient atmosphere content. With R12 the general way to determine proper pressure is not seeing passing bubbles in the receiver drier glass window while the compressor is operating. With R134a bubbles are the norm.
