The guy is really full of it. Who is he and where is he located? I'm in NJ and might be interested in "kicking his tires." I'd like to ask him if he found the tire iron? The reason he didn't is because there's now one up his...
I would not donate the car yet. I do not think you have a serious problem. The original rough running symtoms sound like a big intake plumbing leak or a bad Air Mass Meter. If you can find an air mass meter with same part number to borrow for a few minutes, I'll bet the car will run like new.
Can you get the car home? As I suggested before, try to get it running and unplug the AMM for limp home mode. Look for any disconnected or split large intake hoses between AMM and throttle body. Duct tape will provide a temporary patch to get you home.
Water in gas will have no effect on O2 sensor. If fact water injection is a common performance addition for turbos to cool the fuel charge and reduce knock. Water is a wonderful combustion chamber and spark plug cleaner, when sprayed from an old windex bottle into a grommet on the intake body.
A new O2 sensor is around $50 and the job is within the capacity of a novice DIY'er. The trick is to get the old one out by wrenching it whlie the exhaust is hot.
