Just repaired the clutch master in my '89. I'd been bleeding the master to keep the clutch going for months. One of the symptoms that I experienced, other than soft pedal, was that I couldn't pressure bleed it.
Turns out that, in mine, the spring which returns the piston the the all-the-way-back position was broken into 3 pieces, so the inner seal was covering the fluid refresh hole instead of being behind it. And, of course the seals were worn.
With new seals, a replacement spring from a spare master cylinder, and removing the varnish that built up at the open end of the cylinder, it's like having new clutch hydraulics.
One thing to watch out for with rebuilding a clutch master (other than broken springs) is that the hole in the pushrod yoke (where the master cylnder meets the pedal) can wear into an oval just like the hole in the pedal. So you can end up with some extra play.
