Those screws can be a PITA. Try a small, needle-nosed Vise-Grips and grab the screw from the side; has worked well for me before. Also, for the future a flex-shaft driver is an indispensable tool. As for more space to work in, I have removed the coolant reservoir and hose to the water pump.
Use new screws with a hex head instead of the round flathead type.
You're sure it's not the alternator ground wire that's the problem? If you discover it's broken, then you'll want to do the alternator bushings and bracket bushings--use OE (Boge) rubber, NOT polyurethane. the bushings deteriorate, the alternator dances, the wire vibrates, weakens, breaks, car dies. Hell, while you're at it, may as well replace the belts.
BTW, to get the alternator out, you need to unbolt the compressor and move it out of the way but not fully remove it.
