Dear all,
I am the owner of an 88 900T, with 224,000 miles on him. Over the past few weeks, I've been having some bizarre electrical issues with the car, and I'm not sure where to go from here.
What started it all was a dead battery. I went to get in my car, and drive, and it didn't budge. No cranking, no sputter, nothing. So, I boosted the battery off of my friend's car, and figured "okay, so I need to work on the car a bit." After charging the battery with a charger, the car seemed to run fine, for about a week, then the same thing happened. Dead car. So, I decided that maybe the alternator, or the voltage regulator on the alternator, was toast.
I then proceeded to remove the alternator, to discover that the ground wire from the chassis of the alternator to the engine block was really bad. I replaced the wire, and replaced the alternator, and so far, the battery is remaining charged, and charges while the car is running. What I have now is something a bit odd, that I was hoping someone on here could help me with.
The electrical system in the car is now pulsing. While the car is running, the lights are getting bright, dim, bright, dim, in repetitive, almost cyclical pattern. It doesn't matter if I'm going along at 4000 rpm's or sitting at idle at a stop light. I don't know what could be causing this, other than perhaps the voltage regulator itself. I removed that part from the alternator, and checked it. I also had the alternator bench tested (something I didn't know Napa did for free) and found that the alternator/voltage regulator were operating normally.
So, I'm lost...if any of you have any ideas as to what could be causing this, I'd love to hear them. I'll be sure to keep checking this site, as I want to get this fixed before I do any serious driving.
Thanks!
