Sounds like a bad ground or poor connection. First take a jumper cable and jump from the alternator case directly to the battery negative post. If the problem goes away, the problem is ground related or you have a bad alternator ground wire(hidden breaks are common).
As RichardM suggests, clean all the major ground points: Radiator crossmember, trans case, head near injectors, battery cable connectors.
Further checks with a voltmeter can pin down other bad connections. Get a digital voltmeter to check battery voltage, should be about 12.6 volts. Then check voltages around engine compartment working your way away from the battery postive post checking: starter solenoid, alternator big red wire, power distribution point over near P/s reservoir. Voltage should be close to 12.6 at all points. If you come to a point where the voltage drops by .5 volts or more, the cable or connection btween tht pont and the last good point is bad.
