Dash Instrument Light fuse blowing...(long) Posted by vsfoxe [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Dash light fuse blows when headlight switch is turned to "ON" or "Parking Lights". Fuse doesn't blow if headlight switch is in the OFF position, but can't see any dash lights either. I thought the dash lights were on at all times? Fuse 23, 10 Amp. No other electrical problems that I'm aware of.
'93 900T, pretty decent condition. Haven't ever seen anything scary on it yet. I have a Bentley manual, Volt-Ohm meter, etc. I'm reasonably familiar with C900 Turbos, and electricity, but can't seem to get very far with the Bentley schematics! This car's interior lighting seems odd in one way - the "key illumination" light only comes on when you physically switch the interior lights "ON". In my '90 SPG, the "key illumination" light comes on just like the other interior time-delayed lights comes on when door is opened, etc. Related?
Was working in OEM CD-Player & Radio/Cassette area, because the Code would be lost every time the key was turned off (I suspected a bad wire, but it was the 3 Amp fuse in the Radio Basket). So I gently tore the dash console area apart.
While doing that work, I noticed one of the Instrument Panel lamps was out, so I removed the left speaker, removed the socket, replaced with a correct Saab bulb. Next time I checked the lights, the fuse blew. Now I've blown about 30-40 fuses, trying to locate the problem, and I'm out of ideas.
So far I've:
„h Replaced the suspect bulb
„h Replaced the bulb-holder
„h Inspected the Printed Circuit Board - looks like new
„h Removed knee bolster, unhooked the rheostat and jumpered the 2 connectors together (full on)
„h Removed the shift console and inspected wires (car was "attempted theft" and I'd replaced the shifter assembly)
„h Removed Radio & CD-player, including racks
„h Removed Relay E (Time Delay Relay) under rear seat
Still blows fuses. If I put an ohmmeter on the fuseholder (not 12 Volt side), it reads about 3.x ohms, but my SPG reads 9.x ohms, with key/switches in same positions. But, the cars are different too (1993 vs 1990).
Hoping for ideas/experiences/suggestions? A list of what's on that fuse so I could inspect all those locations. Anything to look for other than a wire or connection that is shorting to ground?
