I had a similar situation once- the root cause was the instrument panel dimmer. The dimmer switch had loosened a little, and its two wires were twisted together, eventually shorting out after getting hot.
This was causing my instrument lights (not the dash buttons, but the gauge lighting) to fail, as well as most of my brake lights! I think the saab engineers wired the gauge lights to the taillights to alert the driver that something was wrong before causing an accident.
The car in my case is an '86 SPG.
Good luck!
