I have a similar issue with my '89 900T. When I bought the car, the seller told me that he had repalced the turbo because the "old" didn't seem to work as well as it used to I guess. So he puts the "new" (I'm sure it wasn't brand new) turbo in, and he said that it had even less boost. I drove the car and it seemed "ok" so I bought none the less.
After solving some Idle problems (IAC, vac. leaks etc.) I got the car to run a lot smoother, but was still only able to acheive base boost (1/4 of the yellow or lt. red). So I began to investigate deeper, and not too long into it I noticed that the knock sensor was not connected. So I plugged it back in and went for a little test drive... I got on a straight road and once I got into 2nd and about 3k I stepped on it pretty good. The gauge flew past the original sticking point, r's hit almost 6k and the wheels spun.. I immediately shited into third and caught my breath. It scared me because the only time i ever acheieved this much boost was by disconnecting the APC box (I think cant remember what we did) and I hit the fuel cut off. this car seemed like it would blow up if I didn't watch it.
So I have taught myself to limit the r's to 4.5-5k if I'm trying to go faster, and I rarely accelerate hard in second. But should I be worried?? I haven't gone through everything, But I think the car is stock. He did replaced the ECU but thats all that he claimed to have done. In 3rd,4th, or 5th gear I can still get into the red (1/2 way maybe at most) but nothing like 2nd gear.. Obviously I don't want to hurt the car, and obviously I love the extra oomph, though I rarely enter the "red zone" any more.... any suggestions?? or should I just continue not to let anyone else drive the car (not like I would anyways!!) and keep any eye on the r's and boost...
