For $25, you can rent an engine hoist; money well-spent, in my opinion. You're going to need to lift the engine off the gearbox when splitting them up, and lower it down again when mating to the new one. Not sure how you'd accomplish this with the DIY hoist over the front of the car. You won't be able to roll the car out of the way unless you re-attach the spindles. I guess it'd be fine if you're moving the car around using a floor jack up front.
Buy a short wobble socket for the bolts that mate engine to gearbox; makes things much easier. Check for sure, but I think it's 13mm, maybe 12.
One thing I'm glad I did before pulling the engine was to take it to a car wash with a setting for engine cleaning (low pressure, hot water, degreaser). The engine and the engine bay were pretty darn clean (exception: power steering) before I started pulling the motor. I would do it again this way. Keep the motor running while cleaning; cover and avoid spraying the electronic bits, i.e., distributor. Also, this is an environmentally responsible way to clean many miles of gunk off.
Unless you have the special lever tool, pull the clutch before you pull the motor.
May as well replace the CV boots while everything's apart. Also, the front sway bar bushings, both inner and outer.
If you're feeling up to it, pull a crank and rod bearing to measure, just to see how things are coming along.
I would replace the oil pump seal. Also, the power steering bracket bushings, and belts.
