John-
I'm not much of a techie, but I'm driving my 2d Saab, a '96 900S. My first was a new '83 900 Turbo. In 1996, I had about 90,000 miles on it, a few cross-country trips and a lot of expressway driving, but also a lot of stop-and-go and winter driving. I gave the car a good beating.
I started to have trouble shifting into reverse, and then the shifter wouldn't stay in reverse at all. For a few weeks, I struggled to avoid situations where I had to use reverse gear, but it drove me crazy, and on 4th of July weekend in '96, I traded the car in.
A Saab dealer, and a different guy who trades vintage cars, both told me that the transmission was shot, and had very little value, might be of interest to someone who could buy it for a song and put in a new transmission.
I hope that hasn't happened with your SPG, but it sounds similar. A few months ago, the clutch cable on my '96 snapped in traffic. A service guy told me that Saabs don't have the best clutch cables. Reluctantly, I paid a lot to have the entire clutch replaced. I hope it was a good idea, I had 62,000 on my car at the time. The clutch was acting funny on my '83 when the transmission gave out, also. I was probably lucky never to have needed clutch work of any kind on that car.
I wish you luck in resolving this. However, it does seem like the Saab transmissions often act up when you get 100,000 or more. I'm hard on a car, and I park in a city lot 6 floors up, I'm sure that's hard on the transmission, but I don't seem to be able to get lots and lots of miles on a Saab before things start acting up, even though I've liked the cars.
Best wishes to you, good luck with the SPG. If you think of it, perhaps you can post on the bulletin board and let us know how this comes out.
