Your car's OEM narrow band sensor has limited accuracy--it's accuarte only when the car is running at or near the proper, "stoichiometric" air/fuel ratio. Outside of that, while the sensor can tell that the car is running rich or lean, it can't do it accurately.
Wideband sensors, on the other hand, can measure the full spectrum of air/fuel ratios and can do it accurately. They are much more complex than a standard O2 sensor and require a controller to manage the heater element; therefore, they are incompatible with a car designed for a narrow band sensor. There are several cars on the market that incorporate wideband technology, e.g., Honda, VW, et al.
