A wideband O2 sensor would be useful for someone who wants an air/fuel ratio meter. That's particularly useful for folks that have done performance modifications.
The O2 sensor is designed to give a signal with a lot of resolution right around the stochiometric ratio of 1. A lot of resolution means that the ECU knows that it's exactly 1, or 1.01, or 0.99. Anything much higher than 1.1 or less than 0.9 is simply "rich" or "lean". For the purposes of the engine control, this is necessary.
During a lot of engine operation, especially at full throttle, the engine control doesn't use the O2 sensor, because it knows the engine must be run richer or leaner than normal. This is out of the range of the stock sensor, and that's just fine, the ECU is using different criteria for controlling fuel. But somebody who has done performance mods may want to know the ratio at that time.
The important thing to know is that the Engine control is not designed to work with a wide-band sensor. I'm sure someone has found a way to work something up, or has just installed a wide-band sensor and let the ECU figure it out. I would think that if you really wanted an air-fuel ratio meter, that you would install a separate, wide band sensor in addition to the 'stock' sensor.
