Now, one guy does not the rule make. But.
A rebuild cost me around $400ea, vs new around $800. The common fail route is the carbon bush seal at the AC clutch, and the rebuilds widely regarded as even more prone to failure than the originals. Anyway, now having gone thru two rebuilds, and despite the replacements being covered under rebuilder's warranty, have now spent MORE in 14 months on re-installs/recharges by going this route, than just buying a new compressor the first time and (perhaps) being done w/ the matter. At present, have spent $1200 on re-do's, and have barely functional AC in N Carolina... and rather peeved :p Word to the wise - on this part, consider seriously spending more up front IMO.
