There are some things you can do to reduce the risk of getting a bad compressor:
Find one from a car that still has all its refrigeration lines attached. Even if all freon has leaked out of the system, you shouldn't have any rust issues.
Remove the lines at the compressor, remove the A/C belt, place your thumb over the hole on the suction side of the compressor, & turn the compressor by hand with a socket. You should feel a vacuum against your thumb.
Check for shaft play & make sure that the pulley spins freely.
Check for evidence of oil leakage at the compressor similar to what you currently have.
Remove the expansion valve & inspect it for debris. If there is a lot of debris circulating in the system, it will find its way to the expansion valve.
If you have a 12 volt source, you can check for good clutch engagement. You can check this before installing it in your car.
If you're willing to charge your system with something like Freeze 12 instead of R12, you will considerably reduce the cost of a recharge in the event you get a bad compressor. In fact, you don't have to be licensed to buy Freeze 12; so, if you have your own gauges & vacuum pump, you can recharge yourself. You'd only be on the hook for the cost of the Freeze 12 & the cost of evacuating the system.
