Engine coolant drain plug broke - need help!

While removing the engine drain plug (coolant), the dang thing broke, leaving half of it in the conical fitting attached to the block. The 16V "Official Service Manual" (Bentley publishing) says not to remove the fitting (cover) from the block. Anyone know why? Seems like I could unbolt that from the block and either replace it or drill out the broken part and reuse it, but I don't want to if that's a bad idea for some reason.
If I take the exhaust off I might be able to drill it in place on the block, but that seems like a clumsy solution.
If anyone's got any experience with this thing, I could sure use it pronto, as I have to get this car back on the road!
Thanks!
