Looks like the threads on the plug are just fairly short - like only 4 or 5 threads - and what I thought was the "other half" of the plug is just sludge. Took the exhaust off and ran a drill up into the hole, and the sludge started to come out pretty easy (but still no coolant coming out - uh oh.)
Still wondering why they don't want you to take that assembly off the block, tho. Could be that when the book says to remove the drain plug but don't remove the large plug or the fitting they both thread into, they might just mean that you don't _have_ to remove those.
If I took that fitting off the block (which I'd still like to do, it it's not going to cause a headache), I could clean out the drain path. If anyone knows about this, I'd be much obliged.
Thanks!
