My pliers and driveway must be special...that or my luck was good that day.
I removed 3 bolts from the downpipe, 3 more on the turbo, and pulled the elbow off; took just a few minutes. Put the Vise Grips on, hit its handle once or twice, and the threads broke loose. A lot of impact force can come easily with a 3-pound hammer. Actually, now that I think about it, I didn't use the bench--I put it on the driveway, stepped on it to hold it steady, and...whack whack.
Elbow was heated somewhat but not scorching; I simply handled it with a rag. Wasn't hot enough to melt my shoe sole :-) It may be helpful to have a torch handy. A good dousing of penetrant 24 hours prior to doing the job would help, too, though I skipped that step.
For a non-turbo, I think there are 8 bolts instead of 6 to get the header pipe out. Yes, you'll need to put the car on ramps/jacks for a non-turbo, and it will take a little more time to get the bolts out (I use a long extension and go at them from below).
Because the sensor was broken, I didn't care about its condition, hence, the Vise Grips. I also didn't have the proper wrench. I suppose that, if the hack Vise Grips method fails to free the sensor, the proper tool would be nice to have.
Good Luck!
0.02, YMMV Actually, your mileage may vary a lot. But, hopefully, it won't...
