tommy,
#1 concern (in N.E.) is rust. typical spot such as under the plastic fender flares, spare tire well and in the lower control arm areas (front).
I've had my 89 spg (tird owner) for 5 years now. Ok car, but like Randy said, be prepared to work on it yourself (out of love and financial). I'm trying to decide whether to just take it off the road or part it out (major stuctural rust and some mech issues). I had an 87 900T for 6 years (having mechanics perform the work) while in school and it cost me probably in the vicinity of $10K.
I bought an 88 SPG in very good shape recently and have put about $650 into it (parts only) performing the work myself. You will pretty much get what you pay for with any C900.
Repair records are huge. Milage is less and issue if all the expensive things (tranny, steering rack, ect.) have been done.
My advice if your planning on holding onto the car forever is to get the best example you can find (still count on spending about $1K in the first year). If your just looking for a quick car to tool around in, you may want to broaden your horizons to 900 turbos and puchase the "spg package" as money allows, but those are getting scarce too.
Remember, these cars are 15 years old. They make great daily drivers if you have back up transportation.
Best of Luck
Nate
