The AMM does have a 'sudden' failure mode. It uses a very fine wire to sense the mass flow of the air (it sends a current through the wire, heating it, then determines air mass flow by the energy loss of the wire). If this wire breaks it's all over for the AMM.
If you take the AMM out, and hold it up to the light, you should be able to see the wire in the middle (it's very fine and not easy to see). Notice that there are screens on the ends of the AMM - they're there to protect the wire.
There's a test procedure where you start and run the engine, making sure that it sees at least 2500RPM, then shut it off and observe the wire. Four seconds after shut-off it should glow red for 1 second. This behavior is intended to burn off any contaminants. To do this test you have to disconnect the AMM from the air filter (so you can see in), but you must leave the other end (to the manifold) connected or the car won't run!
If there's no glow the wire may be broken or there may be some other problem. If it does glow it's probably ok. Is there a specific reason you suspect the AMM?
Can't explain why an AMM failure might be 'related' to other work done on the car. Could be coincidence, could be it's not the AMM, or could be that your mechanic did use your car as a parts source. Good luck.
