I agree with BobD. I've seen this problem on several 4 doors. There's one wire that goes from the L/H light cluster to a ground point on the center line of the car, and it grounds ALL of the lights at the rear of the car (the R/H lights ground through the L/H side via a wire between the two). They try to funnel too much current through this one wire, or at least its connection to the light cluster.
If you disconnect the harness from the L/H cluster you'll probably find that the connection for the ground wire is melted. Without this ground path, the rear lights try to find other paths to ground, usually through the parallel-wired front bulbs - the parking lights, turn signals, reverse lights, etc. Regardless, it leads to bizarre lighting behavior.
I've fixed this by adding independent ground wires for the light clusters, as BobD suggests. I have crimped a ring connector to the end of my new ground wire, then pop-riveted it to the ground bus of the light cluster (you have to drill a hole in the ground bus, and you have to provide a hole for the wire to come out of the cluster. I would recommend using a higher-rated wire than SAAB does, 16G or better.
