I accidentally posted this to the wrong board before, but anyway:
I am in extreme need of help here guys . . . I've had 5 Saabs and know a pretty good deal about older Saabs (pre 95)but here's my delima . . . my friend Michelle has a 1997 Saab 900 SE Turbo, 5 speed with 118K miles on it. She was sitting at a red light, went to shift and nothing. Long story short, I replaced the cable (which was snapped and had been confirmed to be installed correctly by a Saab tech). Now the pedal doesn't have the resistance/stroke it should and took it to a foreign trans. shop after having it diagnosed by a Saab tech from a local Saab specialty shop for a clutch replacement. The place we took it was NOT the Saab specialty shop, but another place my friend wanted to take it becuase the price offered to replace the clutch was $650 (pretty cheap - maybe even losing the shop money). So the car was towed there and then the next day, guess what? . . . the price jumped to $1500. Imagine that. I suspected at this point that the shop realized what they had done by underbidding the job. But anyway the shop claimed the clutch fork was "bent", which I guess is possible, but here's where I need the reader's help . . . the shop "claims" the fork is internal and requires disassembly of the transmission and also a lot more labor and a gasket kit for the tranny also. When I call and inquire about status this guy seems to be hesitant in offering information about status on the job and simply states "it takes time to tear this thing down", but based on what he told me the teardown should have been done by Friday afternoon, the parts ordered that afternoon also and the parts should arrive Monday morning and be reassembled and ready to drive away by Monday afternoon. Does any of this seem strange to you guys? Is the fork internal? Are their two forks in this trans (internal/external) if the original job was $650 for a clutch isn't the fork right there with the clutch assembly anyway and wouldn't the fork be a simple cheap add-on repair since the fork would have to be removed anyway to do the clutch?
Any help is appreciated. I know you guys know your stuff here. Any refernces in information, links or diagrams would be much appreciated to help me understand this. My dad's an engineer so as his son, I'm pretty well versed on mechanics, but I'm kinda suspicious of this one.
The car should be done tomorrow, but I have to work and can't confront this guy in person about the work being done. So how should I advise my friend to handle this situation?
