Car is an 87 900S 16V. I was trying to get to TDC #1 to change out my distributor. After serveral attempts at bumping it with the starter & going past #1 each time, I used a socket on the crank pulley to rotate the engine backward in order to get back to TDC. I'd say I rotated it no more than 10 to 20 degrees. Once I got everything back together & tried to crank the car, it'd crank just fine but wouldn't fire. On the 2nd attempt, either the starter or the motor seized up on me. Retried, & it cranked over a few times just fine but then siezed again.
I decided to pull the valve cover & turn the motor by jacking up the front end & putting the car in 5th. The motor still turns just fine. The timing marks aren't perfect, but they're darn close; less than 1 tooth off. However, there is a good bit of slack in the chain between the cam sprockets; I'd say about 1/4" to 1/2" of total play.
I decided to crank the motor with the valve cover off in order to see where things were locking up on me. It cranked just fine 3 times; 10 to 15 seconds each. I couldn't get it to lock up again.
I'm not 100% sure it's the motor that is siezing on me. It could be the starter as well. I bumped it quite a few times trying to get the motor to TDC #1 (I was being lazy). I also tried to hook my remote start switch to it & did so incorrectly. It made the starter spin without engaging the bendix. Also, whenever I crank the motor, I can hear that it is making good compression on all 4.
Does the timing chain lose tension if the motor is rotated backwards? If so, is there a way to retension it without pulling the motor?
Thanks,
Michael Keith
