I just bought an 89. Two days ago, the left roof handle broke, and this morning, the right broke as well. I don't drive this much with the top up, and its in a garage. I called my local saab dealer today to inquire about the cost - $258 per handle. Not including parts. Its a die cast piece of metal about 5-6 inches long. INSANE. I could probably have someone mold me a pair for less than that. I might just use a pair of vise grips to latch the roof if I can't find used parts available.
I noticed that on both occasions, the break occured from not re-seating the latch handle to its proper place after lowering the roof.
Other than that, I LOVE the car. It handles very well, and has a very nice blend of ride and handling. I am particularly impressed with the rigidity of the body - I drove a NG900 convertible which flexed like the dickens on bumps. These cars are solid. Just have it checked over by someone who knows saabs. I drove mine 8 hours with the top down on the way home, and the wind noise was so low I could actually have a cell phone conversation at 80mph.
