86 900 Turbo Wiring Problem

My situation:
Car is a 900 two door 1986 5 speed turbo. The wiring harness near the shifter appears to have shorted and resulted in the car almost burning up.
I have removed the fuse box from it's plastic holder where I found three gray wires burned. I have removed the dash and instrument panel where a few wires leading from the white or clear modular plug that connects to the fuse box burned. I have removed the shifter console and this is where the problem appears to me to have started. The heat was so intense that it melted the black plastic air box that sits above the wires running to the shifter. The wires are all melted together in one heck of a mess. :(
I would like suggestions on the best way to fix this problem. What wiring harnesses from what year and model SAAB's will work ? Can this part of the wiring harness be purchased new ? If so, how much is it ? How about used ? If used, from where, and what should I expect to pay ? Should I try and create my own harness to replace the part of the harness that burned up ? Is this a common problem and if so does it occur mostly with manual SAAB 900's ? If I create my own harness where is the best place to get wiring supplies ? It would be nice to find a source where I could get matching wire colors with proper stripes, etc.
Sorry for the long post. Any help appreciated. Need to get the car up and running ASAP.
