I have a 1989 900i with 189k. Labour Day morning I started the car and it started as usual but quickly stalled. While the engine was cold, it idled un-evenly with rpm fluctuating from the top at approximately 1500 then dropping to 500 or less, then stalling unless I pressed the gas pedal. Once the engine warmed up, it idled but unevenly. The 'CHECK ENGINE' dash light stayed on. It ran with very poor acceleration and 'uneven' when stopped (in any gear) and the rpm continued to fluctuate up and down but engine did not stall after it was warmed up.
I took the SAAB to the local dealer who has now had it for three days. They have performed a major tune-up, have found some minor pressure leaks in some hoses, but when cold it still runs poorly. They tell me that they can't find specifically what's wrong but are willing to keep looking if I'm willing to pay the $98 per hour they charge. What they have told me is that the engine runs lean but they don't know why. They say that they have checked all the major possible issues.
This is my first SAAB and I've owned it for about seven years. Unfortunately, I don't have bottomless pockets so I would appreciate any help with this problem so I can give them some hints as to where to look.
Cheers and Thanks.
