'78 99L (8v, non-turbo)- driven from 120,000 to 150,000. Needed head gasket at ~125,000.
'80 900 GLi (8v, non-turbo)- driven from 85,000 to 145,000. No head gasket problems.
'83 900 Turbo (8v)- driven from 135,000 to 225,000. Cracked cylinder head at 145,000.
'86 900 Turbo (16v)- driven from 165,000 to 205,000. No head gasket problems.
'86 900 (8v, non-turbo)- driven from ~175,000 to ~200,000 (intermittant odometer) No head gasket problems.
'86 900 SPG (16v turbo)- driven from 160,000 to 242,xxx and counting. Blew head gasket at 205,000 after running high boost/aftermarket APC box.
IMHO, there is no need to replace the head gasket if there are no symptoms of failure. The best preventative maintainence is to make sure that the cylinder head bolts are all torqued to spec.
