As if this little headgasket/timing chain/5spd conversion project hasn't taken long enough, now I find a crack in my "good used" 5spd: it goes almost all the way around the aft half of the transfer case(?) which is to say that I noticed it from the inside with the front cover off; it passes thru the top- and bottom-left bolt holes, right under where the clutch will go.
Now, I could obviously go back to the seller and demand a GOOD ONE this time, but I'd rather not swap whole trannies because the previous maintenance and condition of this one was a selling point: I don't know exactly what to look for in terms of pinion wear, but it looks real pretty inside. There was hardly any metal in the bottom at all, just enough to coat the drainplug magnet and reverse gear wear is barely noticeable. I was all set to clean and flush this one aggressively and expect at least another 50k of spirited driving from it.
On the other hand, both I and this car HAVE to be in another state by next weekend (there is my job and this is my ride) so time is constrained. How messy would it be to replace that part of the case, or does this start to constitute a rebuild for which I have neither time nor money? And just out of curiosity, where exactly does the pinion bearing live?
My mom's BF thinks I should install it anyway, that all it'll do is leak some oil until I can make the seller/mechanic hook me up another way, but that sounds rather dodgy. Like I said the crack goes all the way around that middle casting except for one inch, and that's what's holding the weight of the whole motor/tranny assembly to the front motor mount, as well as stabilizing it against torque to the wheels...
I've heard talk of welding, but also that the piece has to come off the tranny for that anyway, in which case replacement is no more work and probably stronger.
Ever heard of anyone dealing with this in a successful and timely manner? For specialist recommendations I am in UPstate (not Weststate) NY, think northern VT, altho for the right fix I'd go anywhere in the norhteast.
TIA...
