Oh Bother! manifold stud blues

At some point last week I began to smell exhaust fumes while driving. Listening to up close while working the throttle cable, I could hear and smell exhaust escaping (pip pip pip) from the manifold, somewhere underneath. My guess was a crack in the manifold. Off to the junk yard for a good used one. Found one, $15, easy removal. Using WD40, I was able to remove the securing nuts without breaking the studs on my car. To my surprise, I could detect no crack when my car's manifold was removed. The mating surfaces did have a buildup of crap, so I figured I'd just clean it up and reinstall. All the nuts tightened up nice, except for the forward top one. To my horror, the stud sheared off at the base! My guess is that stud was weakened prior, which allowed the exhaust to leak. The leak and sound are the same as before now with that one stud off. OK, so now I have to remove that stud and replace it. Fortunately, it's the one stud you would want to break since it's the easiest to access.
Any tips for best removal with one of those retraction bits?
