i would think lifting the crankshaft out would allow replacement of both mains AND rod bearings, no? or are you suggesting simply taking of the main caps and replacing the bottom bearing?
its a good point you make as i have an 86 SPG engine in exactly the same situation (on a stand, tranny off) and i wasnt going to touch the bottom end, but since i have the bearings in possession, i could take the crank out, have it polished and install the new bearings...
i hate like hell to take the pistons out because they'd need to be cleaned and ringed, reinstalled, etc ...and i dont have time.
then you are looking at ballhoning and resurfacing the block, etc and the snowball is rolling, to quote Anders...
