Recommend checking extension of camshaft timing chain tensioner per bentley manual. If excessive extension, then replace chain, guides, and sprokets.
Replace "O" ring where oil pickup tube goes into alloy cover at firewall to prevent air leaks. Old "O" rings usually very hard.
On tranny, you can remove fill/dipstick cover and inspect reverse gear and pinion for chipped teeth. You could also fish around main case sump with a magnetic pickup tool to see what hard parts are damaged. You can also easily pull off differential drivers (keep track of shims) after loosening bearing cap bolts and check for wear on ring & pinion gear. Also would try to see if any axial movement exists in pinion shaft. All this increases probability of a good tranny, but no guarantees until you test it in the car under load.
