Power steering suddenly stopped

I was driving down the highway yesterday and suddenly there was a loud spinning sound and then a huge bang like something had dropped out the bottom of the engine of my 1992 Saab 900S. I felt something hit the wall/floor behind my right foot.
When I got to a mechanic, I learned that the A/C belt tensioner had snapped, and other belts had come off. So, I've lost A/C AND power steering.
I'm not a mechanic, and don't know the engine well. I just want to know whether it's possible that the belts for the A/C and power steering are close/intertwined in such a way that if I get a new belt tensioner back on there, and put the belts back on, things will work again.
How does the Power steering pump work? Is it powered by a belt from the engine? (Could a snapped belt mean that it would suddenly stop working?)
I think a belt just went bad, and that's what I felt hit the wall behind my right foot. Nothing major dropped out because the cars behind me did not swerve.
I would appreciate your advice.
