The power for power steering is provided by a belt driven pump. Belts drive the A/C compressor, alternator, and water pump. Since the belts are sort of intertwined, if one lets go, it can easily take another one off it's pulley(s). Lose the belt, and the pump stops working. It's the same as if you had shut off the car and were trying to steer.
As noted, you probably got an alternator light (BAT light) when the belt to the alternator came off. Hopefully you pulled the car right to the side of the road, because you won't be driving the water pump, and the engine could overheat if you continued to drive it more than a few hundred yards.
As to repair, a new tensioner and new belts, and you should be right back on the road.
