i think i found the problem in my procedure: i had the drain bottle elevated so as to see bubbles coming out. this prevented adequate bleeding.
once i put the drain bottle down on the ground, voila! hard pedal.
the other thing i did was take the cap off the MC reservoir, put the pressure bleeder cap on (sans pressure) and depress the brake pedal a few times. i read on a volvo post that this can also help to get air out of the MC.
unfortunatley i dont know which of the above two things solved the problem..
